When insuring a vehicle there are many factors that may affect the overall price that you are offered (age, experience, additional driver qualifications, use of vehicle etc).

All questions asked by any insurance company must be answered honestly, failure to do so could result in the insurance being cancelled or worthless should you need to make a claim. There are three different forms of cover:

  • Third party only
    • Legal minimum. Covers other people and property that may be injured or damaged, but does not cover damage to the vehicle or yourself
  • Third party, fire and theft
    • As above but also covers should the insured vehicle be stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Fully comprehensive
    • As well as covering other people and property this insurance also covers damage to the insured vehicle

The majority of insurance policies have an excess stated on them, this is the amount that you would need to pay should you make a claim.

In some circumstances an insurance company may provide you with a cover note. This provides you with the same insurance cover as having an insurance certificate, but will only last for a limited time, usually one month.

If a police officer asks to see proof of valid insurance you must be able to produce it at the time or at a police station within a specified time (usually 7 days).
