On road requirements

Any learner driver that drives on UK roads must have an accompanying driver of at least 21 years of age AND currently hold a full EC/EEA licence for the type of Vehicle (including manual or automatic) for at least THREE years.

L plates must:

  • be displayed at all times that the learner is driving the vehicles.
  • be clearly visible to other vehicles from both in front and behind the vehicle.
  • conform to legal specifications
    • Red L on white background
    • Be of correct size
  • When the vehicle is not being driven by a Lerner (except driving tuition vehicles) the L plate should be removed  or covered.

There is a legal minimum eyesight requirement when driving a car, you must be able to read a car number plate (made after 1 September 2001 ) from 20 metres. You must wear your glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you need them to meet the ‘standards of vision for driving’.

You must tell DVLA if you’ve any problems with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye. This doesn’t include being short or long sighted or colour blind.

At all times the licence holder is responsible for informing the DVLA of any changes, these maybe:

  • Change of address
  • Change of name
  • Change in health that affects your driving
    • You must report any medical condition that might affect your ability to drive safely
    • You must report if your health deteriorates and you become unfit to drive
    • A list of notifiable illnesses is available: https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving

You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA about a medical condition that affects your driving. You may be prosecuted if you’re involved in an accident as a result.

As of June 2018 learner drivers may drive on the motorways, however they are only permitted to do so when accompanied by a fully qualified driving instructor (ADI) and that the vehicle travelling in is fitted with dual controls.
