The hazard warning switch is located in different positions dependent on the car, where ever it is located it’s usually:

  • Within easy reach of the driver’s hand
  • Clearly marked to prevent accidental use

Hazard warning lights should be used responsibly and appropriately. They should not be used to excuse parking or stopping in inappropriate places, instead they should only be used to warn others of potential danger this may be:

  • You are temporarily blocking traffic due to breakdown
  • You are temporarily blocking traffic due to accident ahead
  • You need to slow rapidly on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway due to a hazard ahead

When the hazard warning light switch is pressed all directional indicator lights will flash on and off together at the same speed as normal indicators. As such it may cause confusion to other road users if they are unable to see both sides of the vehicle.
