Parking at night

When parking at night you must not park against the flow of traffic unless it is within a recognised parking space.

Vehicles (1525 kg or less, unladen) can park at night on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less without the need to leave parking lights on. They must be parked both parallel and close to the side of the road.

Highway code rule 249: Parking lights

When it is necessary to park on a road with a speed limit above 30 mph there are some rules that should be adhered to:

  • You must ensure that side or parking lights are left on, this is unless a road sign informs that they are not required
  • You must not leave your vehicle on the right hand side of the road, unless on a one way street.

Once stopped you should always turn your headlights off as the fixed glare can cause a distraction to other road users, especially if the vehicle is facing oncoming traffic, lights should be turned off even if you have only stopped for a short time.
