Pedestrian Crossings

General Rules/ Consideration

  • You must not park:
    • On a crossing
      • This will block observations for the pedestrian
    • Within the area marked by zig zag lines
      • This will block observations for both vehicles and pedestrians
  • You must not overtake
    • The vehicle nearest the crossing
    • Any vehicle that has stopped to give way at the crossing
    • Where no zig zag lines are present you must still not overtake
  • Keeping all sections of the crossing clear when in queuing traffic.
    • If it is not clear that there is space after the crossing or you cant see, wait before the crossing.
  • Pedestrians may cross when traffic is queuing, they may assume traffic has stopped to allow them to cross.
  • Where it is not possible to clearly see all areas of the crossing, take extra care. Pedestrians may still cross even if your view is obstructed.
  • Allow pedestrians as much time as they need. Don’t try to ‘move them along’ by revving engines, edging forward or sounding the horn.
  • Always check both sides that there are no pedestrians rushing to cross at the last minute.
  • Ensure that all pedestrians have finished crossing before you move forward, they may trip, drop something or change their mind and double back.
    • This applies on signal controlled crossings, you must still allow pedestrians to complete the crossing even when the lights have changed

For all crossings . When there is a staggered central refuge (each side do not a line) in the middle of the crossing each half should be treated as individual crossing. However if the crossing has a central island where each side are in line; except zebra crossing, you must wait for people coming from the other side of the island. Zebra crossing ahould be treated as two seperate crossings in both instances.

At some crossings there is a bleeping sound or voice signal to indicate to blind or partially sighted people when the steady green figure is showing, and there may be a tactile signal to help deaf/blind people. (Rule 26)
