Essential Reading Material for Part Two Test Candidates .

There are several publications, which give advice about good driving procedures, in general, and about the Part Two test of driving ability:

  • Driving the Essential Skills
  • The Driving Instructors Handbook
  • The Guide to Learning to Drive
  • The Highway Code.
  • The Part Two Driving Workbook (This course)
  • The National Standard for Driving Cars and Light Vans (Gov.uk)

You will have already studied most of these books in some detail for the Part One exam to be able to recall facts about a wide variety of driving-related matters. Now you need to revisit them and concentrate specifically on how to improve your overall driving standard. Each book offers an insight into one or more areas of good driving procedure and the Part Two test. You should read relevant parts of the books in conjunction with the Part Two training you do with your trainer and prior to your own practice.

Driving the Essential Skills
It is an essential reference book for Part Two test candidates. It concentrates on explaining correct driving procedures for virtually every driving situation. Driver skills and attitude are constantly referred to in developing defensive driving techniques and the correct driver behaviour. You should dip into this book regularly as part of your preparation.

The Driving Instructors Handbook
Specific advice on the Part Two test requirements can be found in this book. The ADI Part 2: Driving Ability section gives general advice about preparing for the test and it profiles the “perfect driver”, if such a person exists!

The Guide to Learning to Drive
Though targeted at learner drivers, the Guide to Learning to Drive does give, in some detail, the basic standards required to pass a driving test. Many of these standards are applicable to the Part Two test.

The Highway Code
You should have read the Highway Code several times and know that it is mainly a list of driving rules and regulations. It is worth re-reading as you embark upon your Part Two training.

Show me/Tell me Questions
DVSA has introduced 5 show me/tell me questions into the Part Two test. Each incorrect answer will be recorded as a driving fault up to a maximum of 4 faults. Should all 5 questions be answered incorrectly, this will be assessed as a serious fault and result in test failure.

The examiner will ask the candidate before the drive to describe how to perform a check on the condition and safety of three components of the vehicle and demonstrate an actual check (or operate) a further two controls whilst driving.
